The Board of Investment (BOI) led a delegation of executives from the public sector and private entrepreneurs from Mie Prefecture, Japan, to visit the Thailand Science Park (TSP). On January 10, 2024, TSP welcomed the delegation, including the Director of the Employment and Economic Department of Mie Prefecture, Mr. Takanao Onishi, and the President of the Mie Prefecture Small Business Association, Mr. Noritada Mitsubayashi, along with 20 other entrepreneurs from Mie and the BOI officials. The visit was hosted by Associate Professor Dr. Veerachai Achariyajunya, Deputy Director of the National Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA), who oversees the TSP.
Associate Professor Dr. Veerachai discussed the success of assisting foreign technology entrepreneurs conducting research and development at TSP. He highlighted various activities carried out in collaboration with partners, including business matching events with Danish entrepreneurs through the Danish Trade Council in Thailand, and research units of the South Korean government, aiming to stimulate innovation more rapidly under the support mechanisms of the BOI.
He also invited the entrepreneurs from Mie to establish research and development facilities and expand their businesses at TSP, which currently hosts 42 multinational companies, accounting for 35% of all companies in the park, including 20 Japanese companies.
The delegation was given an overview of TSP by Deputy Director Mr. Sanat Wongtaweethong and toured several facilities, including:
  1. The Electrical and Electronic Products Testing Center (PTEC), offering testing, calibration, and R&D of electrical and electronic products, batteries for electric vehicles, automotive electronics systems, and EMC testing for entire vehicles, supporting the growth of the electric vehicle industry and new energy industries.
  2. BIOTEC Bioprocessing Facility, conducting research and providing services in semi-industrial scale bioprocessing, addressing the needs of the biobased industry sector and operating under international food production standards like CODEX, GHPs, and HACCP at the BIOTEC Pilot Plant.
  3. Yamamori R&D center, a leading global sauce manufacturer with its headquarters in Mie Prefecture.
After the tour, discussions were held to explore collaborative opportunities between the public and private sectors of Mie and TSP, to support and promote Japanese entrepreneurs looking to expand their businesses in Thailand and use the country as a soft landing for market trials, while also providing opportunities for Thai entrepreneurs to expand their businesses and innovative products into the Japanese market.
